Although the best rule of thumb is to continually vary your setups from game to game, these are some smart setups that you can use to start the game. Combined with using the strategies listed in the strategies page, you should gain a strong advantage over your opponents.
Sample Bomb Placement Setups
"three back pockets"
This setup requires your opponent to guess which of three locations your flag is located. Sergeants are inside two of the pockets to remove your opponent's miners. All three alternatives keep your flag protected in the rear flanks, and provides plenty of room to move pieces around your side.

"double bomb protection"
This setup is designed to deplete your opponent's miners. Your oponent must use at least two miners to capture your flag. Once you use the original setup on your opponent, you can start altering where you place your flag. Alternates 1 and 4 can be used often. Alternates 2 and 3 should be used less frequently. In alternate 4, in the three spaces behind your sergeants keep weak pieces (Scouts and your last Sergeant) you do not care about losing.

Another alternative
Try this variation out, after you have used the previous strategies often. Your oponent will assume he knows about where your flag is, and will spend his time going after those regions. This should buy you some time to find his flag. This strategy worked for me the only time I tried it. Notice your flag is protected nicely behind your marshall, and your general is protected by your spy. Both high ranking pieces have command of the center of your board.
